| Breaking News |  | Wednesday, November 1st, 1939: Gehrig Tops Best Batter List It's been a year of triumph for veteran Lou Gehrig of the Brooklyn Dodgers as he hit his way to the 1939 National League Most Valuable Player Award.
The 36-year-old veteran compiled a .337 average and .441 on-base percentage by putting together 202 hits, 30 doubles, 11 triples, 46 home runs and 115 walks. He proved it in award-winning style as he accepted the National League Cy Young Award today.
The veteran Brooklyn hurler posted a record of 25 wins and 8 losses this year with a 2.73 ERA.
