Friday, August 16th, 1940: Season Possibly Over for Joe Unknown
Belle Chasse starting pitcher Joe Unknown could miss the remainder of the season because of a torn bicep muscle. He exited yesterday's Laredo game after injuring himself while throwing a pitch. The original diagnosis said Unknown would be out 4 months. Later on his doctors said he could be out even longer.

"He's done," his manager commented at the BNN press conference. "It's a season-ending injury, but it could have been worse. It's not the worst-case scenario, so we're happy about that."

Wednesday, July 31st, 1940: Gillenwater 5-5 Against Belle Chasse
"It was like I was hitting little league pitching," said Carden Gillenwater after his 5-hit performance against the Sycamores. "No offense meant to Belle Chasse, but it was like I was back in little league again. I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid league park, it was Shadows Ballpark."

The Plano left fielder had a fantastic day at the plate, knocking out 5 hits in 5 at-bats and pacing his club to a 11-3 victory.

His manager elaborated after the game to the press, saying, "Carden worked the entire offseason on trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball and the hard work is paying off in base hits."

"That's what I'm trying to do," Gillenwater said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."

C. Gillenwater singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off J. Unknown in the 8th.

So far this season Gillenwater has gotten 117 hits in 384 at-bats for a .305 batting average with 6 home runs. His stats include 42 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He has played in 101 games.
Thursday, July 4th, 1940: Hegan Goes 7-8
It was a sensational day at the plate for Jim Hegan as he led the charge to a 16-14 win over the Sycamores.

The Plano catcher was pure misery for the Belle Chasse pitching staff. He left them shellshocked with 7 hits in 8 at-bats in an explosive display of hitting.

The manager for the Sycamores told BNN reporters after the game, "Hegan put the ball into play. He really hit it hard. When you do that, you've got a pretty good chance to do some damage. And that's what happened. I feel like we threw some pretty good pitches, but he just put some good swings on the ball."

J. Hegan hit an RBI single in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, walked in the 9th, hit a two-run home run off J. Unknown in the 11th, flied out in the 13th and hit a two-run single in the 14th.

Presently Hegan is batting .354 with 104 hits and 12 home runs. He has knocked in 47 runs and scored 44 times.
