1939 was a special season for Philadelphia (A) left fielder Ted Williams and it was capped off today with the announcement that he was named the winner of the American League Most Valuable Player Award.

Williams compiled a .405 batting average and a .539 on-base percentage this year. In 135 games he piled up 185 hits, 32 doubles, 5 triples, 38 home runs, 128 RBIs and 131 runs scored.
Friday, September 29th, 1939: Williams in Select Company, Bats .405
It might look like a typo in this season's stats reports. But the .405 next to the name of Ted Williams is no mistake. That's his batting average for the recently completed season. Williams is the newest member of baseball's .400 club.

The Philadelphia (A) left fielder tried to downplay the achievement. "It's just a number," he said. Then he admitted with a grin: "Okay, it's a big number!"

That number puts Williams in the record books with some of the game's great players.

His other stats during this remarkable season include 185 hits, 32 doubles, 5 triples, 38 home runs, 131 runs and 128 RBIs.
