| Breaking News | | Tuesday, April 29th, 1941: Kracher Gets 5 Hits Joe Kracher was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over Wreckers Ballpark, collecting 5 hits, but wasn't able to win the game. He got his 15 minutes of fame and the Richmond Railcats got the 7-4 victory over the Wichita Wreckers.
"Headlines and highlights are great, but it takes a lot of luster off of it because we lost the game," he expounded to the press after the game.
After the first three hits, everybody's in the ballpark was drawn to him each time Kracher stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Wichita catcher said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for high average is to relax, concentrate, and hit the ball where they ain't." That's exactly what he did today as Kracher finished the game with 5 hits in 5 at-bats and a line in the record book.
J. Kracher singled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit an RBI triple in the 4th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This season Kracher has delivered 21 hits in 72 at-bats for a .292 average with no home runs. He is getting on base at a .350 clip and his totals also include 7 RBIs and 12 runs scored. This year Kracher has played in 16 games. | | Sunday, April 13th, 1941: Powers Bangs out 5 Base Hits "Believe it or not," said Modesto first baseman Les Powers, "they threw me some good pitches today."
That would be hard to believe for anyone who saw him dispose of the Railcats with a great 5-hit performance.
"He made it look easy," said the Richmond manager, who saw his team fall to the Modesto Tiger Sharks, 10-9. "Hats off to him!"
L. Powers singled in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 8th.
