The Raleigh Diehards got a great effort from Harry Gumbert as the 31-year-old hurler tossed a complete-game 4-0 shutout over the Randolph Thunderclouds. He struck out 1 while allowing 3 hits and walking 0.

 | Friday, August 16th, 1940: Osborne Sizzles, Paradise Fizzles
The Springers manager was philosophical after his team was shut out by the Randolph Thunderclouds 2-0.
"It was just one of those games, shake it off and do better next time," he said.
Wayne Osborne blanked them on 3 hits with 2 walks and no strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs. They were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Osborne said.
"I set them up pretty good, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
In 1940 Osborne has posted a record of 10 wins and 16 losses with a 3.63 ERA. He has appeared in 34 games and struck out 38 in 220.2 innings.
