He also racked up 80 RBIs and scored 120 runs, signaling that this might be the beginning of a solid baseball career. |  | Tuesday, October 3rd, 1939: Birkofer Fires Shutout in Red Sox Win Ralph Birkofer of the Boston (A) Red Sox was on top of his game today. He tantalized the Detroit Tigers with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 9-0 shutout.
In the postgame comments, the Detroit skipper said, "He had the changeup working. You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
