Friday, September 6th, 1940: Double-A Pitcher Award Presented to Garland Star
The Garland clubhouse staff referred to him as "the kid" this season. Next year Orval Grove will have to have a new nickname. He earned it after winning the 1940 American Association Double-A Pitcher Award.

Grove made 26 starts this year, winning 17 and losing 4. He threw 211.1 innings, fanned 157, allowed 166 hits and 46 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .216 average as he logged an impressive 2.13 ERA.
Friday, August 23rd, 1940: Riggs's 23-Game Hit Streak Ends
The Findlay Vision won the game 7-3 over the Garland Knighthawks. At the same time the Knighthawks mound corps did what no other team could do. They stopped the 23-game hitting streak of Vision third baseman Lew Riggs. But that was still not enough to win the game.

"Our pitchers may have focused a bit too much on stopping Riggs," the Garland manager commented afterward. "He had a nice hitting streak going, but the Vision have other hitters and they did their job today."

This season Riggs is swinging the bat at a .348 rate with 190 hits in 546 at-bats. To date he has hit 12 home runs, scored 91 runs and driven in 62.
Monday, August 12th, 1940: Edwards Week's Best Player
21-year-old Hank Edwards sent shock waves through Triple-A Baseball last week with an eye-popping performance that brought him the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Edwards made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .571 average, 8 hits in 14 at-bats, 2 home runs and 3 RBI.

Where the Garland Knighthawks right fielder goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Edwards certainly made his mark last week.

Edwards is presently hitting at a .318 pace with 5 home runs and 41 RBIs. He has played in 89 games and scored 50 times.
