| Breaking News | | Friday, August 2nd, 1940: Maglie Magnificent in Riverside Win Sal Maglie of Glendale easily handled the Riverside Talons, stopping them on 5 hits and chucking a complete-game 1-0 shutout.
"He really did a job on us," said the Riverside manager. "He had good command of his pitches. He changed speeds well and pretty much confused us. We never could zero in on him, but he certainly zeroed in on us."
Maglie said, "Everything was working for me. Throwing my breaking stuff over the plate was big."
He finished the game with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks in a solid outing.
His record in 1940 is 7-4 in 15 starts and Maglie has a 3.01 ERA. | | Friday, July 26th, 1940: McQuillen Bashes 5 Base Hits It was high-5 day at Garland Fields, at least for Glenn McQuillen of the Garland Knighthawks. He got a lot of high-5's from his teammates for his outstanding hitting against the Riverside Talons. McQuillen smashed 5 hits in 6 at-bats on his record-setting day, leading his club to a 10-3 win.
His manager said, "Glenn was hitting everything. It really was a special game for him."
In the other dugout the opposing manager told BNN beat writers, "He ambushed my boys today. Obviously we didn't have much success against him, but luckily, tomorrow is another day. Hopefully it will be our day to shine."
G. McQuillen singled in the 1st, grounded out in the 3rd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit a two-run single in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This season McQuillen has 5 home runs and a .365 batting average. | | Tuesday, July 23rd, 1940: Hudson Befuddles Riverside All went well for Sid Hudson of the Spokane Rascals as he pitched his team to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Riverside Talons, limiting them to 4 hits while ringing up 7 strikeouts and surrendering 2 walks.
In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Hudson.
His manager described him this way: "He's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy. He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."
The Riverside skipper said, "He doesn't give you anything twice. It's a guessing game with him and today my club was always guessing wrong."
This year Hudson has made 26 starts, thrown 186.2 innings, fanned 73 batters and walked 105. His won-lost record is 13-9 with a 2.75 ERA. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 7-12, .368 PCT | | Position in Division | 8th, 6.0 GB | | Record at home | 5-7, .417 PCT | | Record on the road | 2-5, .286 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 0-2, .000 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 3-4, .429 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 2-3, .400 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 5-9, .357 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in April | 7-12, .368 PCT |
