| Breaking News | | Friday, April 18th, 1941: Crossbows Blank Winter Hawks, Olsen Wins Vern Olsen had the Glendale Winter Hawks dancing to his tune today with a sparkling 3-0 shutout performance for the Huntington Beach Crossbows. He gave up 2 hits and collected 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Glendale hitters were bewildered throughout the game by his delivery.
The opposing manager said, "When you face a guy who hides the ball like he does, it takes a couple of at-bats to try to find his release point. We just never figured him out."
| | Monday, August 12th, 1940: INT's Top Player, Heath of Huntington Beach It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the International League, but last week Jeff Heath of the Huntington Beach Crossbows reminded everyone just why he's here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week.
Heath rocked opposing pitching for a .538 average (14-26), 4 home runs and 10 RBIs to come away with the award.
Hitting .317 to date, Heath has 19 home runs and 89 RBIs. He has played in 113 games. | | Friday, August 9th, 1940: 5 Hits for Riflemen Irvin It was an almost perfect day. Saint Paul right fielder Monte Irvin displayed a hot bat today, enjoying an outstanding 5-hit day. But something was missing -- the Riflemen failed to win -- they lost to the Huntington Beach Crossbows 7-3
"Some days, Lady Luck is on your side, some days she's not," he modestly told BNN reporters after the game. His manager told the beat writers otherwise, "His hitting wasn't luck today. It's his solid approach to hitting. Monte is focused, patient and he hits to all fields. The more solid at-bats you put together, the more success you're going to have, and vice versa."
The 21-year-old right fielder for the Riflemen collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats to get his name in the record book.
M. Irvin tripled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 7th and singled in the 9th.
This year Irvin is hitting .291 with 29 home runs and 95 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .363 clip and scored 85 runs. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 13-7, .650 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 3-3, .500 PCT | | Record on the road | 10-4, .714 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 0-2, .000 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 3-1, .750 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 1-2, .333 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 12-5, .706 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 5-5, .500 PCT | | Record in April | 13-7, .650 PCT |
