After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.
In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Brooklyn shortstop said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."
Nobody was at home today as Wells finished the day with 5 hits in 6 at-bats and a line in the record book.
W. Wells tripled in the 1st, grounded out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit a three-run home run off C. Perkins in the 8th.
In 130 games Wells is hitting .283 this season for the Dodgers with 152 hits, 4 home runs, 54 RBIs, 95 walks, .389 OBP and has scored 107 runs. | | Sunday, August 27th, 1939: | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 49-105, .318 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 36.0 GB | | Record at home | 26-51, .338 PCT | | Record on the road | 23-54, .299 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 8-8, .500 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 17-16, .515 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 19-47, .288 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 30-58, .341 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 3-7, .300 PCT | | Record in April | 4-12, .250 PCT | | Record in May | 11-18, .379 PCT | | Record in June | 8-20, .286 PCT | | Record in July | 7-19, .269 PCT | | Record in August | 10-19, .345 PCT | | Record in September | 9-17, .346 PCT |
