Monday, September 11th, 1939: Lewis Week's Best Player
Buddy Lewis demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the National League Player of the Week Award.

The Pittsburgh third baseman wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .542 average (13-24) with 1 home run and 3 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

In 1939 Lewis is hitting .315, batted in 51 runs with 6 home runs and 53 runs scored.
Friday, September 8th, 1939: Wells 5-6 for Dodgers
Willie Wells was on quite a roll today as he knocked the ball all over the park, collecting 5 hits and leading the Dodgers to a 17-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

After the first three hits, all eyes in the ballpark were drawn to him each time he stepped into the batter's box. Even a few of the opposing fans were pulling for him, knowing they were watching a little baseball-hitting history unfold.

In the clubhouse, crowded by reporters, the Brooklyn shortstop said, "I never realized that batting a little ball around could cause so much commotion." When asked what the secret of hitting so well is, he smiled and replied, "The key to hitting for a high average is to relax, concentrate and hit the ball where they ain't."

Nobody was at home today as Wells finished the day with 5 hits in 6 at-bats and a line in the record book.

W. Wells tripled in the 1st, grounded out in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, singled in the 6th and hit a three-run home run off C. Perkins in the 8th.

In 130 games Wells is hitting .283 this season for the Dodgers with 152 hits, 4 home runs, 54 RBIs, 95 walks, .389 OBP and has scored 107 runs.
