Monday, October 30th, 1939: 1939 NL Best Rookie Named
Rookies are supposed to be seen, but not heard. At least, that's how most veterans feel. But that's not the case with Cincinnati's Tommy Holmes. He spoke up loudly and often this season on his way to winning the National League Rookie of the Year Award for 1939.

To be accurate, the 22-year-old right fielder let his performance do the talking. In his debut season Holmes piled up some good stats, hitting .312, driving in 78 runs and scoring 76 times, while playing in 150 games. The Reds newcomer also had 32 doubles, 5 triples and 8 home runs.

Sunday, August 6th, 1939: 2500 Hits for Waner
The day belonged to Paul Waner of the Boston (N) Braves as he became the latest player to reach the 2500-hit plateau. He did it in Boston (N)'s 5-3 win over Cincinnati.

"It's a moment I'll never forget," said Waner after the game, "2500 hits is a lot. It puts you in a very select group. I never expected to be around long enough to reach a milestone like this."

He finished the day with 1 hits in 4 at-bats.

During his career Waner is batting .332 and has totaled 80 home runs.
