Monday, August 7th, 1939: Lanning Sharp in Shutout
Before the game Johnny Lanning liked his chances and his instincts proved to be right. In a superb outing the Giants pitcher whitewashed the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-0.

Lanning said in the clubhouse afterward, "I just had a feeling it was going to be my day. My control was awesome. I could throw my curveball even when I was behind in the count."

The New York (N) starter held Pittsburgh scoreless, giving up 1 hit while registering 5 strikeouts and issuing 1 walk.

"We didn't have very many good at-bats," the Pirates manager said in his postgame interview.

"When that happens, you usually lose."

This year Lanning has worked 174.2 innings with 59 strikeouts en route to a 5-15 record and a 4.74 ERA.
