Friday, July 21st, 1939: Smith Fires Shutout in Red Sox Victory
In an impressive outing, Hilton Smith whitewashed the Washington Senators 5-0.

"I'm getting a lot more downward movement instead of side to side. That side-to-side stuff can get hit a long way," said Smith, who is throwing with more of an overhand motion.

"It's not rocket science. It was just a little adjustment, but that's all it took."

The Boston (A) hurler held Washington scoreless, allowed 6 hits, chalked up 7 strikeouts and yielded no walks.

To date this season Smith is 14-2 with 23 starts and an ERA of 3.21 with 108 strikeouts in 182 innings.
